I just did my first free hand quilting art peice. I combined velvet and rayon threads-a no no in polite quilting circles. It is almost like a high. The ability to turn this fabric into art is amazing. I have never felt like this about anything I have done in my life. To hold the fabric, touch the beads and the thread and watch a peice come to life is like nothing I've experienced. Does anyone else feel this way when they create or I'm I just a little off?

"a no no in polite quilting circles"

Wow, that's kinda like being the Dorothy Parker, the Jim Morrison, the Arthur Rimbaud of quilting!

And yes, I get quite a "natural high" from painting sometimes, but then there's other times, when it's a natural dysphoric; which seems to be lately, I'm working on it though... ;\)

I feel that way when writing a lot - but as far as working with my hands goes, I remember specifically a night that I sat carving a skeleton hand from a piece of pine and eight hours flew by and the hand was done and it was light outside and I could not believe that it had been more than an hour.

You are not off, or at least you are off in a good way.

i know what you mean about working into the night. I worked till 2:00 a.m. on my feather purse and forgot to eat dinner while working on a beading project for the Cannon Beach show. Thanks for sharing your thoughts-it helps sustane my creative energy. It's like being at the AVA-the colors, smells and energy of the other people feed my soul and lead me one to new projects. As for Jim Morrison-my drug of choice is chocolate but I have to be careful with that. Chocolate finger prints on a $20.00 peice of velvet kinda runs the muse!

Southern Cal artist Ed ruscha cretaed a "chocolate room" for the 35th Venice Biennale in '95"

"Ruscha creates Chocolate Room, an installation for the 35th Venice Biennale, again using an unconventional medium-Nestle's chocolate paste-silk screened onto 360 sheets of paper and installed like shingles on the gallery walls. Chocolate Room is recreated in 1995 for conceptual art exhibition "Reconsidering the Object of Art" at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and again in 1999 for..."

I saw the piece in LA - it smelled beautiful, and was pretty too...

Oh, when is the next one? It think it would have been amazing to see and smell that. What a complete creative experience.

Well, I just finished the top. It is the largest piece I've ever done-about 4 foot by three feet. I used yarn for the kelp stem (appliqued it down) and I, gasp, free handed the leaves and cut and appliqued them. I stood back a few minutes ago and couldn't beleive that was my creation. It has been so long (30 plus years) since I have done this much creating. It is so powerful to be rediscovering that side of me. Perhaps, soon, I'll go back to writing, too. Guess I won't push that. Too many other projects right now.

Thanks for listening and thanks for your support!
