"Anthropologists have made no serious attempt to disabuse the public of the widespread notion of the ubiquity of anthropophagists."

This sentence is not nearly as symmetrical and poetic as the last one, but it is still emblematic of a very basic fact, which still, to this day, continues to blow my mind, and hence, contains an indication of a poetry all its own, so wrap your Einsteinean Special Relativity Noodle around this one...

"On earth, all naturally occurring muons are apparently created by cosmic rays, which consist mostly of protons, many arriving from deep space at very high energy ... despite their lifetime, which without relativistic effects would allow a half-survival distance of only about 0.66 km at most, the time dilation effect of special relativity allows cosmic ray secondary muons to survive the flight to the earth's surface."

In other words, muons have a mean lifetime of 2.2μs (which is a very damn short time, indeed), and without relativistic time dilation due to velocity (according to Einstein) there would be no way in which such a subatomic particle, from such a distant place, could ever possibly reach earth to be detected and measured.

PS: Einstein published his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905 -- long before there was any tangible empirical means of proving such a theorem. And you wonder why theoretical physicists still get so hot and bothered about old Uncle Albert... ;\)

PPS: We're so sorry, Uncle Albert, but we haven't done a bloody thing all day. We're so sorry, Uncle Albert, but the kettle's on the boil, and we're so easily called away...

PPPS: According to Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (pub. 1915), it would take you forever to fall beyond the event horizon of a black hole, because the immense gravity would result in extreme time-dilation: as mass increases, the relativistic velocity of time decreases...
